This scenic loop begins at the car park just beside Lowther Castle and explores the surrounding estate. The route takes you through woodland trails, along the River Lowther, and across open parkland with sweeping views.

There are several great spots along the river for dogs to paddle, and the wide open spaces make it ideal for off-lead exploring. The walk ends with a memorable stretch heading directly back towards the impressive castle, rounding off a relaxed and rewarding outing.

Walked all year round, this one has your dog in and out of the river and through plenty of mud, which is hard on their skin and coat. A little salmon oil over their food helps keep both in good nick through the wet months.

Route Instructions

Step 1: Start at the car park

Begin your walk at the car park. Follow the path leading down to the castle.

Step 2: Go right at the fork through the kissing gate and follow the path

Step 3: Keep the castle on your left and follow the path into the woods

Once your through the kissing gate, keep the castle on your left and follow the path into the woods.

Step 4: Take a right turn at the fork at the bottom of the hill.

Continue down the track and ensure dogs are kept on leads due to the steep drop off

Step 5: Continue through the gate and continue straight down the road.

Step 6: Go through the gate next to the cattle grid and follow the path on the left side of the road

Step 7: Continue along the path for around half a mile

Step 8: Go right at the fork and follow the path back up towards the castle to complete the walk

Optional: Go left at the fork and take the dog for a dip just over the bridge

Dog Friendly Serves Food

Tucked away in the village of Askham, this cosy spot is one of our favourites. Parking is available around the back of the pub, or you can follow the free village car park sign just 20 meters up from the pub.

The fish and chips are our top pick. The Sunday roasts are also excellent, but you will want to book ahead in the colder months when it gets busy. The beer garden out front and down the side gets the sun all day and is a brilliant spot to relax with the dog.
